Water Budget

Kathiroor is a small village that is a treasure trove of biodiversity. The watersheds of Kallumbram, Eruvatty and Ponniyam are included in this panchayat. There are 13 ponds in the Kallumbram watershed, 7 ponds in the Eruvatty watershed and 10 ponds in the Ponniyam watershed. Most of the water bodies dry up in the summer. Kathiroor is also noted as an area where groundwater levels drop. This is where the importance of the water budget comes into play. The panchayat has implemented many water conservation activities. The Urava project implemented by the panchayat is to preserve the wetlands. The public walk and data collection through the watershed areas were notable. The first ever Thod Sabha was held in Kerala in collaboration with Haritha Kerala Mission and Panoor Block Panchayat. As part of the Thelinirojzukum Navakeralam project, more than 5000 people participated and cleaned the streams and ponds. Swimming Village is a project launched by the Panchayat to ensure the availability of groundwater. Combining water availability, health, education and cleanliness, the Suryanarayana Temple pond is being cleaned with public participation and swimming training is being provided to children and adults of the Panchayat. More than 2000 people, including children and adults, have learned swimming through this project. The Panchayat is also taking over and cleaning other private ponds in the Panchayat that are in a deplorable condition and making them part of the Swimming Village project. Through this, the Panchayat will be able to increase the level of groundwater in the Panchayat. The potential for many activities has been demonstrated by intertwining with the irrigation project planned by the Panoor Block Panchayat for the protection of water bodies.
